Emotions and environment are separate issues, almost mutually exclusive. And by conditions, there is almost an infinite number of implications by that. But here has been my observation:

It's a fact that there is a limited amount of resources. It is a fact that the world's population is growing exponentially. The economic problem is defined as allocating limited resources to the seemingly unlimited desires of the population (whether or not it is growing). Here's where I try to tie this fact in to your question.

Human beings are the only being that governs their behavior not by instinct, and not even necessarily by knowledge, but by belief. Belief that God will provide and protect, so we can consume as we please. Belief that the enemy will invade, therefore burn the resources to prevent the enemy from obtaining them. Belief that the public will get loans and buy the cars we produce, therefore fill countless dealership lots with unbought--and in our current economy, unaffordable--steel, rubber and plastic.

And with an exponentially increasing population, each one of us should ask ourselves more and more: "What if everyone does what I do and uses the amount of resources I use?"
