What are the most promising future technologies to invest into?

I am trying to come up with a list of technologies that are likely to become widespread 10-20 years from now and essentially replace whatever we use now. The ultimate goal is to invest a certain amount of money into corresponding companies and forget for a decade or so.

So far, I got geothermal and tidal/wave power, genetically engineered crops, therapeutic stem cells and RNA interference, smart traffic controls, biodegradation, wireless electric grids. What else?..

I think General Electric (GE) will probable own or out do most of those companies so I would go with a conglomerate. !0-20 years they’ll buy all the successful power companies, maybe tidal/wave power, wireless electric grids. They are still involved in new electric technology and aircraft engines. Lots of companies still have other names, but are owned by a conglomerate such as GE.

How to connect internet? Can anyone list the related technologies as many as possible?

I want to give a brief introduction of the technologies of how to connect internet, such as DSL, isdn and so on, in my paper. However, as a software engineer, I do not know much about the communication technologies. So I hope someone will be kind enough to give me some hints or offer me the way to solve the problem?
what’s more, is there any useful paper or review in the field?

Thee is DSL, ADSL, Cable, Dial-up, satlelite…on and and on…..wifi is a distrobution of any of these through radio signals…..also look up tcp/ip (vincent cerf), PPPOE (point to point proto over ethernet)

How far away are life extension technologies that can prolong human lifespan by at least 10 years?

Excluding technologies such as healthy diet and lifestyle.
I refuse to die! Please no responses about how we are destined to die, unless there is solid proof of some sort life extension is impossible.

My guess is that it has occurred, although not enough time has passed for verification.
There is a non-profit organization dedicated to just that purpose (no set limit). It was founded in 1983 (I think) and inspired, and contributed to, by Durk Pearson (triple major – Physics, Biology, Psychology – w/a triple minor at MIT) and Sandy Shaw (double major – Chemistry, Zoology – and a minor at UCLA), co-authors of "Life Extension, a Practical Scientific Approach" (1982). They are/were the only instance of anyone ever beating the FDA (unanimous decision), in a landmark case involving allowing claims for scientifically proven health benefits for supplements. Durk has also done a lot of work for NASA and oil shale research (US Dept. of Energy), among other things. They are the real deal, as evidenced by the extensive research done by them, and others, and thoroughly documented by credits/attributions/references to the actual research papers in their book.

From the Life Extension Foundation site (about us):
"The Life Extension Foundation is a nonprofit organization, whose long-range goal is the extension of the healthy human lifespan. In seeking to control aging, our objective is to develop methods to enable us to live in vigor, health and wellness for an unlimited period of time. The Life Extension Foundation was officially incorporated in 1980, but its founder has been involved in antiaging research since the 1960s.

The Life Extension Foundation is the largest organization dedicated to investigating every method of extending the healthy human life span. When seeking methods to slow aging, The Foundation often uncovers potential anti-aging supplements to treat conditions associated with aging."

Can someone give me a list of inventions or technologies that were developed in Atlantic Canada? NS NB PE NF?

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a list of Atlantic Canadian technologies only. I’m planning a project for my students, but can only come up with national lists, and to be honest I’m trying to save time.
AGAIN: I already have lists of Canadian technologies, I’m looking for Atlantic Canadian only. (No offense to the rest of my beautiful country, just making it relavent to the curriculum.)

Thanks!

Canada never invented anything except hockey and curling.

What are some advanced technologies that are transforming the field of psychology besides computers?

What are some advanced technologies that are transforming the field of psychology besides computers?

Many technologies have tranformed the field of psych. Obvious ones are brain imaging technology that shows brain activation and linking it to thought and behaviour. A new discipline called connectionism uses neural networks generated from computer software to help visualise and explain cognitive processes like language acquisition and decision making. Finally, statistical programs like SAS and SPSS are so advanced that they do all the statistical calculations alone.

What are the common technologies used on muscles?

They are those machines and technologies used in muscles, like for example the exercise machines, it helps tone the muscles,,, besides that, what more machines are used to help the muscles?

You can also hook up electrodes (attached to pads) to your muscles that cause the muscle to contract. Bruce Lee used to use them.

How important are IT technologies to develop your business?

every business need IT technologies to grow up? yes,no why?

thank you

today technology is used for networking to bring buyers in from all over the world. That is anything from cellphones to the internet (like websites, emails, discount sales websites, auctions, etc.)

What is the cost of free-lancer developer in India in technologies like dot net, share point and php?

I am trying to do some free-lancing and in conversion with few opportunities. Now I need to provide an estimation. So wanted to know what is the standard rate for developers in India. I need to submit proposals in different technologies – ASP.Net, Share Point and PHP. Kindly advice.

Short answer: A ballpark for web development is $15/hour, especially if you’re still just trying to make a name for yourself.

Better answer: Not just in India but anywhere in the world, this is one of the areas where you have to fish around to find out what the other person is willing to offer. Contracting is tricky that way. You can’t put a static price anywhere the public can see it. If you google around, you’ll see what I’m talking about, no one has quotes listed for this kind of thing. The second you put a price out there, is the second someone else can to undercut you.

Sometimes you do have to throw a number out there before the other person will tell you how much they are willing to spend. In that situation, you should do this:

Ask yourself how much time the project is likely to take
Find out how much it is going to cost you to work on the project (even sitting at home takes time and resources, and every minute you spend working on one project is one less minute you have for another project)
Take that amount and triple it.
Divide that by the number of hours the project will take.

I say triple instead of double because the nature of freelance work is that you will be between jobs for a while and need the extra money to tide you over and stay marketable to other people while you are out of work.

Probably the most reliable way to find out how much you can get for a job, is to call around and ask other people and companies how much they would charge for similar work. Hands down that will always give you the best answer to your question.

Also, don’t trust an answer that’s more than three months old, or any number anyone gives you on a help forum like this (including mine, sorry).

Is it good to invest money in buying stocks in Hybrid and other alternative technologies?

I want to know if it is at this point "wise" to buy stocks and invest in technologies such as Hybrid manufacturing and other alternative energy technologies since I believe this is the future of automation. With the intrdouction of Hybrids by car manfacturers I believe that eventually it will replace gasoline powered cars.

It depends upon the price you need to pay to invest in these technologies. To provide an example, had you purchased RCA at its peak in 1929, over its entire lifetime from that point until it was acquired by Bertlesman, it never reached more than 50% of its 1929 price. As the future would work out, television was bigger than anyone believed and RCA made more money than anyone thought possible. However, at its peak, the price was so high that there is no way RCA could ever have made enough money to meet the requirements that price produced. Just as when Yahoo! was at 230 per share. At that price, Yahoo! would have had to have been the sole source of advertising nation wide, forever, and advertising rates would have had to climb at their historical rates and Yahoo!’s margins could not have fell.

Price is everything.

What are the new technologies or most recent updates in cloning?

I need to make a report about the latest technologies, advancements, methods, and the like about cloning.. i need to find things which date from 2005 up to the present.. or simply just the last most recent updates in cloning.. i couldn’t find anything in the internet.. can anyone give me information or even links?? ; )

Read about how scientists cloned cats, they put in a gene that made them glow in the dark.

What are some technologies that have made police work easier and more more accurate?

Furthermore, what are some programs (strategies, plans, etc) that have made police work easier and more more accurate?

I am trying to put together an outline for a term paper that I have to submit. So far for technologies, I have DNA, AFIS (that automated fingerprinting system), and the license plate scanner that police used to identify stolen cars in parking lots. I am 0 for 0 on programs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Computer data bases like NCIC.

Air unit equipment like FLIR.

There are new crowd control and riot formations that better protect the officers, and allow for swifter response with fewer casualties on all sides.

The implementation of bicycle patrols in downtown areas, not only reduces the fear and incidence of crime, but it has given officers a more nimble means of transport and observation.

As far as policing programs, such as community based policing, and COMSTAT, in all honesty I believe that they are actually detrimental to both the citizen and the patrol officer. They neither make police work easier or more accurate.

Which are the technologies to come which will reduce the internet connection lag?

Which are the technologies to come which will reduce the internet connection lag?
Will the ISP be interested on that? Many server side services as OnLive (Gaming) and others which were not yet launched need no latency to run properly. I wish we had researchers working on that as well as ISP willing to really improved the connection quality, not only the bandwidth.

There is satellite , I have a 50 mbps broadband with a speed booster its lighting fast.I can run 4 computers at once with no delay. Are you using dial up? Perhaps its your provider.

What are some examples of Washington lobbyists suppressing new technologies?

First of all, I just want an answer to the question. No trolling or saying "this candidate will END lobbies once and for all". I need to find examples of corporate lobbyists suppressing new and potentially beneficial technologies for a school project. Thanks for your help.

For years, Congress has been urged to pass legislation to raise the CAFE standards in American cars (a fancy way of saying "increasing the miles-per-gallon). The technology currently exists to make internal combustion engines that get 40, 50 or even 60 mpg, but lobbiests from both the big oil companies and the automakers have lobbied against raising the standards.
I know this does address "new" technologies, but it is an example. Sorry I can’t any more specific than that. Try a google search for more info.

How could a computer network be improved to meet new and emrging technologies?

With the new technology being increasing introduced into the field of IT, my question is: How could a computer network be improved to meet new and emerging technologies?

Wireless N

Blade storage servers with several terabytes(If you have a small business, not necessary)

1000MPBS Lan Speed (would require semi- high end computers, though)

All the same OS (Vista, XP, etc. Vista and XP together don’t communicate very well when it comes to networking)

How important is the private sector for advancing medical technologies?

I noticed on my homepage that a new device has been developed that detects skin cancer early.A huge step in preventative medicine. I remember reading somewhere that government research only accounts for something like 3% of advances in new medical technologies, the rest going to the private sector driven by profit.

Steve , it is the single most important factor that there is, private research has been the key in advancing the science of medicine

What are the advantages and disadvantages of new technologies?

I need the advantages and disadvantages of new technologies. Like hoe robotics causes unemployment, but is an amazing tech.

Advantages:

REDUCED WASTE will lead to lower costs. Today, the amount of waste produced by technology can be the difference between strict environmental regulations and closure (but of course, also profitability).

INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY where properly assessed, increased production, through efficiency and better planning, can also result from the introduction of new technology.

LESS WORKFORCE may be needed if jobs that previously required personnel can now be automated, further reducing costs. This is an added advantage if you have few employees already, otherwise you may face redundancies.

HIGHER PROFITS due to the increased efficiency which produces less costs. It may also be that new technology allows jobs to be completed quicker so that cash flow is more fluid.

A HIGHER INCOME can be yours if your business is making more profit. You may even decide to give your employees a bonus that could increase their motivation.

ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS such as the use of e-mail, computer networks and mobile phones allow information to be sent/received instantly. This is especially useful for long distances where documents and information needs to be passed on quickly. Remote work-force employers (employing travelling sales, home workers etc) have instant access to staff from mobile phones, web cams from PC’s and on-the-road lap tops.

MORE COMPETITIVE as you can afford to lower the price of your product/service if your profit levels increase, without lowering your standards.

——————————————————————————

Disadvantages:

THE MANAGEMENT of new technology can be extremely difficult. If the decision of purchasing new technology is down to you, do you buy now or wait for the next technological advance? Also, you have to decide if the technology is really needed as some things can be expensive. Integrating the technology into your workforce is another task in its self.

NEW SKILLS may be needed to operate the new technology and so you will have to re-train your employees.

MAINTENANCE of the technology will be required to keep it efficient. More importantly, if it is a piece of machinery on a production line: what if it beaks down – will it put a stop to all production?

COSTS are something that will be reduced if integrated properly. You have to consider if you have the finance to purchase the technology in the first place. Secondly, if it is to replace employees, will you have to issue redundancy pay?

TIME can be lost if you have to reorganize the workplace to set up the new technology. This could be an important issue if your business works to tight deadlines. If you have a network of PC’s (even two) you will have to know something about computers to ensure quick resolvement of IT issues.

Working Without New Technology

It may not be your business that uses the latest technology but in some way, your business will still be affected by its introduction. Those who you have connections with may be integrating new technology (example, suppliers) and therefore have a ‘knock on effect’ onto your business. There are literally hundreds of examples that can illustrate this, but to help you understand in the simplest terms we will just outline the more general issues.

For an extreme example, your supplier may also be the manufacturer of your product, and by implementing the latest technology it is making their costs much lower through increased efficiency. Although they may keep their selling prices the same, if you have good relations, they may offer you their service at a lower rate.

Related to the example above, the delivery costs of stock/materials will be reduced significantly due to the introduction of new technology such as better transport storage facilities. f your business uses transport services to deliver your products to locations around the country, than you will further benefit from this advance.

If your competitors modernize their operations and products/service with technological advances, this is where you can suffer. By making their own operations more efficient through reduced costs and speed, they can offer their products/service at lower prices which you may not be able to compete with. Also, little things such as the packaging of their products with new lighter and stronger materials (example, polystyrene) will give their product a significant advantage in the market.

What are some Canadian Technologies of the 20th century that have impacted the world?

I need some technologies before 1995 and after 1900. Technologies that have changed the way people have lived and had an impact on environment. Not only natural environment but all around.

Here is an extensive list so have your pick

As a classroom teacher, what are some assistive technologies one could offer to gifted students?

My school has cut its gifted and talented program due to budget cuts, and I am looking for technologies to help these students. I have already discovered the VLE (virtual learning environment). Any others? Thanks so much!

My school does Podcasting. It is relatively old stuff, but easy for the students to work on. It is basically Powerpoint but for a Mac. It is done using Garage band program. Using this, students can do book reviews, talk about a project they’re working on, or simply tell a story. Music can be added to the narration. This is for an elementary school.

For older students, why not give them a camcorder and have them do their own News cast of events around the school. They can edit the clips and share it with the school, assuming your school has close circuit TV. If not just do it for a class. Videos always seem fun to do.

It is sad that the gifted program was cut. In the U.S. we spend more money on special education than for gifted and talented students. And perhaps it is no wonder many of our brightest students are dropping out of school.

What technologies are used for avoiding or reducing the effect of a collision?

Can anyone name any technologies used in cars so the effect of a collision can be avoided or reduced?

Brains. The single most important technology.

If you use your brains for driving when driving, you avoid all but a very few collisions. If you don’t have collisions, you don’t need to reduce their effect.

Too few people understand this unfortunately. It looks like too many people buy safety features packed cars like Volvo and think now they can get away without using their brains for driving.
