How do I start my photography career young?

hi!
I’m only 16 but photography is so intresting to me! I’ve heard of people starting photogrpahy at a young age, but I’m not quite sure how. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ll be going to college next year and I’m planning on taking some photography classes there, but what can I do now to get a head start? Is there any suggested things to begin photographing? Any suggestions about anything is welcome!
Thanks!

I shot my first wedding at age 13. The couple couldn’t afford a "real" photographer so I volunteered, shot it for free and they bought a bunch of my (way too cheap) prints. I shot candids of my classmates in school; gave some prints away and sold additional copies. By the time I was in college I had a portrait studio in my parent’s home. I also started doing advertising photography for local businesses who also couldn’t afford a "real " photographer … but they ended up paying me real money for pictures they really liked.

Hope that gives you some ideas. You’re never too young to start. Develop good skills and a professional attitude and your youth won’t be seen as a negative by old people like me. :-)

How do i start a photography business?

I want to start my own photography business. I am fifteen and in need of $. I really love photography.

A friend of mine goes to fairs and concerts and sports events very early and snaps pictures of groups and individuals when they arrive.
He sets up a tent and works with strobes and a poster of he event as background. His fiancee takes data of the customers.
U can also go to conventions and balls and of course weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and school events. Even the playhouse and fancy holiday dinner parties at condos.
U will need a clearance from the organizers.
Open a website and show ur best photos as reference.
Sell the snapshots at a low price and print ur business name and phone # on the back for repeat business.
U can do commercial work like posters, business cards and post cards. Make shots of inventories and fleets.
There is a lot of businesses who could use a good photographer. Most are flight by nights. U must return to ur customers to update.

What type of science would photography be?

I have to identify what type of science is photography for my little project for school. My project consists of experimenting with the angles, shadows, and position of my camera to receive different shadows, effects, etc. Help PLease! Is it just photography itself or something totally different?

What are the best ways to sell your photography and where do you buy the protective sheets to package them?

I want to sell some prints of my photography. I put some on Etsy and haven’t gotten any responses or even any views yet. Have any of you ever sold your photography? How much did you sell it for and where? Was it successful? Do you know a good place to buy the protective sheets and cardboard backing for a pretty good deal? Any advice for selling photography prints would be greatly appreciated.

A good starting reference for how to sell your photography is "Sell & Resell Your Photos" by Ron Engh. It’s published by Writer’s Digest Books. Although it’s mostly about stock photography, Engh covers other markets for your photography as well. You might be able to find copies of this book at your local library; your local bookstore; or at Amazon.com. You can also go to Engh’s website www.photosource.com.

The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) also puts out various publications on how, where and for how much to sell your photographs. Their website is www.asmp.org.

In "Sell & Resell Your Photos" Engh also lists suppliers where you can get the protective sheets and other supplies you would need.

Hope this helps, and good luck to you!

What is a cheap digital photography camera?

Next year I’ll be taking a photography class in school. Considering my birthday is soon, I figured that I’d get it now. We really don’t have that much money, so what is a cheap (or decently priced) photography camera that takes good pictures? Thanks.

You may want to check with your counselor/teacher about what kind of camera you need. Are you sure you’re not supposed to have a 35mm FILM camera?

Be sure to check!!! At my HS, everyone has to have film cameras.

Anyway (happy birthday, btw–mine was Saturday), it depends on how much cash you have.

~less than $100–not sure I can help here. Check out craigslist for your area if you only have like $50 to spend. You can probably pick up a 5 megapixel camera for $20 or so

~$100-200 I suggest the Fuji s5700. It’s on sale at CIrcuit city right now for $150.

If you can afford a DSLR, go for it!

btw, I would stay far away from Kodak cameras. From my experience, they take the noisiest pictures ever!! (noisy meaning grainy)

Don’t shop just based on how many megapixels the camera features. Kodak, for example, is bad with this–their cameras usually offer high MPs for low prices, but you get what you pay for.

Once you find a model online that you think you’d like, check out www.flickr.com and look up the camera model to see some sample shots by that camera to see what it’s capable of.

Good luck!!

What is a good begining photography camera?

I would like to take up photography, lately I have taken an interest in it. I was wondering what camera I should I buy. I found cameras but they are all expensive and I don’t have the most money. And I want my first camera to be a stepping stone where i will later replace with a better one.

So I was wondering what a good beginning (and cheaper) camera for photography is?
So you are saying I should just buy any digital camera as a beginner.
I’m not looking for film camera plus I have one of those.

I have said this allot. It is not the camera that makes the picture it is the photographer. For someone just getting interested in Photography you should buy a simple but good camera. One that has a good zoom. Not digital zoom. Never use digital zoom. Only optical zoom. Try to find one that can do manual settings. That way as you advance you can control the completed picture. I like Sony And Olympic cameras. I have a Olympic camera I payed $150 dollars on Ebay. I have some pictures people have bought from it and on the internet. I also have the expensive Canon DSLR CAmera. I use both depends what I am doing. Get one you can afford and learn to take good picture and down the road you get great and want to get a better camera then you can. A good photographer can take any camera and take good pictures and the quality can be adjusted on the computer. But bad pictures are bad pictures.
Learn how to shoot good picture using the rules of photography and composition and then get the expensive camera.

Could a photography student use a student loan to buy a camera with?

I’m going to a community college for an associates degree in communications with a concentration in photography. Could I get enough money to buy a Canon 5D Mark II? ~$3,000. I’m planning to use it all throughout school. How would I go about getting loans or grants for this purchase?
My tuition is around a grand a semester, also.
I’m already paying tuition myself. I never applied for financial aid before. My parent can’t afford to help at all.

If a camera is required equipment for your program of study, yes, it is an educational expense that is a legitimate use of a student loan. Getting the loan is not related to whether or not you have already paid for your tuition and fees. File the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov with your and your parent’s information and PINs and contact your school to make sure that your information is received later next week. How soon you get your funds will depend on their refund policy, however, so check that out with the financial aid office for disbursement dates before you contract for the camera and follow through with all the paperwork.

How should a photography portfolio be organized?

Hey

I’m an amateur at photography, I have quite a bit of shots and I’d like to start a portfolio. It’d like to have one because I’ll be taking a photography class in the fall. My question concerns how the photographs should be organized. Should I place all the best shoots form one shot together or spread them around with other shots from other shoots? Is there a certain way it should be organized?

Thanks.

portfolio organization depends largely on your audience. i.e., who is going to be looking at it. many artists make the mistake of designing the porfolio for themselves. determine what it is your client is looking for. ask as many questions as possible or find out info about the client that will give you some clues as to what to include and omit.
if you just want to put together a broad porftfolio organize by subject: landscape, portrait, abstract, etc. within each subject try to organize thematically. keep photos from the same shoot together.

What is an average salary for an owned photography business?

I’m planning on starting my own photography business with many different types of photography, from sports, landscape, and even portraits. I plan on starting at schools for High School sports and then working my way up eventually. Does anyone know what a yearly salary could be averaged or anywhere close? Thank you so much!

If you are self-employed you can pay yourself anything you want.

To establish what you charge for shooting and prints, you will have to do a P&L sheet which includes your fixed and variable costs as well as the cost of capitalizing your business.

If you figure that you will have to generate cashflow that is about 5x what you want in your pocket at the end of the day you can do a rough estimate of your fee schedule

Remember to include replacing your camera body every 18-24 months and your computer(s) every 2 years as well as upgrading your photo software

To pay myself $80,000 a year (before taxes), I have to generate just over $250,000 in cash flow.

How do you submit your photography work to Galleries for sale?

I’m new to photography and I meant another photographer who told me he sales some of his work at galleries.

How do you submit to Galleries?
How do you find them?
Do you have to pay to submit anything???

I would really appreciate the help here!

his is something I have done for a long time. The first place to start is at any local galleries. Visit the gallery to see the type of art they display. They may or may not be a "fit" for your work. You will usually always have to pay rental according to how much space you want to have, plus the gallery will take a commission from anything you sell, usually 40%, so you have to price your work to make a profit after the commission is taken out.

To get into galleries in different parts of the country, the easiest way is to go to Google and type in these words…

call for entries

This will bring up many sites and galleries seeking work for submission. It is simply a matter of following the requirements of the gallery. There will usually always be a theme they want photos to meet. Yes, there is in most cases a fee you must pay to submit your photos, whether they are chosen to be in the showing or not. So be prepared to lose some money in submission fees. If your photo(s) is selected to be in the gallery, it can mean you may have to send a print yourself and they will frame it, or you may have to print and frame it yourself, or some galleries will print your high resolution digital photos themselves. I prefer to have prints made by my lab so I know the quality is what it should be, but then, if it does not sell, you have to arrange for return shipping. If the photo sells out of the gallery exhibit, again there will be a commission to the gallery.

This can be a lot of work, but also a labor of love. It is very gratifying to have your work acknowledged by the art community. In time, you will fall into the "clique" and will be having galleries contact you with calls for entries. I have received two this week already, plus I have works submitted to 3 different exhibits around the country.

One word of reality though. Do NOT expect to get rich, or even make a living doing this. I know of NO one that makes a steady, living income from selling photos through galleries like this. So don’t quit your day job! lol Most photographers supliment their income with the usual portrait or wedding work, or just have other "real" jobs for steady income. I have sold as many as 4 photos in a couple of weeks, and have also gone for months and sold nothing.

So this is really something you do for the love of it and to be a part of the art community, don’t go into it expecting to make any real money.

What is the best digital photography camera out in the market now?

I want to get into photography, but I don’t know what camera to ask for christmas…
like a nikon or so what?

One things for sure the Nikon D40 ain’t it, cheapest possibly, best? nah.

This is one generation back, which explains the price, but the spec will knock the socks of a Nikon D40, even the D60 in every department.

http://www.srsmicrosystems.co.uk/2043/Pentax-K100D-Super-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body—Pentax-18-55mm-lens.html

Build quality, number of lenses that will auto focus on it (and the price of them), number of functions, every lens is image stabilized as its built into the camera. The list goes on.

What types of cameras would you use for photography?

I’m doing a research project on photography and was just wondering if there’s a possibility of having a list of cameras you would use for photography.
Ex: What kind of pictures would you use to have photographs of nature with HQ?

Digital cameras don’t have that certain HQ I look for in a proffesional camera.

I use the following cameras:

Minolta 7sII – Significant human events
Leica M3

Nikon D50 – Snapshots and eBay product photography

Canon 5D – For producing images that will be printed as digital negatives

Mamiya RZ67 – For landscape and bodyscape

Calumet 4×5" – For pinhole photography, tintypes and Dags

Wista 8×10" – For alternative process landscape photography

I recently saw some gallery wildlife prints that were taken in digital and was astonished by how good they were. However, the landscapes in digital looked terrible. (I couldn’t believe they were hanging on the wall.)

Tonality and detail is the key to fantastic landscape photography. No hand held digital can deliver that yet. World class landscape photography is still the realm of medium and large format film. No question.

they won’t do it, don’t bother

What are some good photography books for beginners?

I have a Nikon D50 and barely know how to use it. I’m not able to take photography classes right now, but maybe later when I have more time.

I’m a photographer and own a Nikon D-50 as well! It’s a WONDERFUL camera and you’re sure to make many beautiful photographs with it!
I personally own this book: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D50-Digital-Field-Guide/dp/0471787469/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/002-7534900-8183210?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191381847&sr=8-3
Not only does it give you some great ideas for taking photos, but it also goes into detail on all the buttons and gadgets on your camera!

Best of luck!

How to get into photography/good beginner camera?

I really want to become a good photographer because I like art a lot, but i feel like I can never focus well with my camera (I have a Nikon coolpix). I took a non-digital photography class in school a while ago, but I didn’t learn anything, so I don’t really want to waste my time in a class again.
I was wondering what kind of camera would be good to get started on? And any other tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Before deciding about your profession I think its always better to ask the older one within your same family and before going for the camera you have to decide which sort of photography that you are going to do with. D-SLR most commonly used by the professional photographers and some other point and shoot cameras also provides both functions like in D-SLR and Compact both in 1 like we have Canon SX10 IS and Canon G10. Those are some good Cameras for the beginner I think. The purchase provides you a mannual book that will teach you a lot about photography and camera functions. You will have to do lot of practical with different lighting conditions and designing if you really want to become a professional photographer or a designer later. Please visit the site

There are different topics included within the site with travel photography and more that will guide you and help you find your answer in detail. Thank you.

How to do good photography with normal digital cameras?

I recently bought the Canon Powershot A550 as it was affordable, $165 AUD.
Its good and everything but I was wondering if anyone could give me tips on doing photography with a normal digital camera, not one of those expensive ones.
Like techniques and ideas.

thanks

Your camera doesn’t have to have all the bells and whistles to make good photographs. You can make some very creative photos just using the auto settings on a basic digital camera. It all depends on the way you frame your photos, the lighting, and the subject itself. Check out the many digital photo contest sites online and see what the other photographers are doing. Take lots of pictures each time you use your camera with the intention of throwing out any or all if they don’t look as good as you want them to look. Digital photography makes it easy to learn as you go since you have the freedom to erase and retake photos many times. Don’t expect instant art from your efforts. It takes some time to develop your own style.

When you get more into photography, you might want to get a better camera. You still don’t have to get a DSLR to take quality photos. There are some very good digital cameras on the market for $500 and under. (USD)

Oh, and the most important tip of all-relax and enjoy the experience each time you set out to take photographs.
