How much dry cat food does my cat really need?

I used to give him a can of wet food every other day and about a half cup of dry food daily, but the wet food gave him diarrhea, so I don’t give him that anymore. He is at a healthy weight of about 8 pounds (he’s almost a year old), and I don’t want him to get fat, but he is always begging for food.
Easy for you to say diarehha isn’t a big deal. You don’t have to clean it off your floor and the poor cats feet after it happens. I need real answers. Not judgements.

None Diarrhea doesn’t compared to blockages, diabetes, kidney disease
Get some acidoupholous from a health food store and sprinkle some on the food each day. You need to feed proper food for the species

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Male cats are especially prone to blockages
from dry food. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. ( Have a fat cat?)
Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don’t use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn’t have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.
THE BEST CAT FOODS CONTAIN NO GRAINS NO BYPRODUCTS
Cats are meat eaters not cereal or rice eaters
Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food.
Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4a.php

Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spring04/Perhach/PetFood/Vets.htm

How much food do you feed your adult cat?

My cat is 1 year old, he’s a male and he weighs 12.2 lbs. He looks slightly overweight because he has a gut that hangs down around his waist. I want him to lose weight but dont know what portions of food to feed him. Currently I feed him a half a can of wet food and 1/2 cup of dry food every day, broken up into 4 meals. Am I overfeeding him? How much should I be feeding him?
The size can I give him is 5.5 oz.

There is NO such thing as dry "diet" food for cats. Dry foods are filled with carbs that make your cat fat. You can’t make a dry food without carbs, so there are no dry diet foods.

The proper amount to feed per cat/per day should be about 5.5 ounces of wet (high quality grain free canned or Raw Meat/Bones/Organ) food.

The calories in that amount of food are sufficient for most "normal" sized cats. Of course a highly energetic cat will need more food to keep it healthy, and a lazy cat will need less food to keep it from getting obese. But 5.5 ounces of wet food per day is a good place to start.

How do Cats and Dogs know which is cat food and which is dog food?

I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. They’re more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients – chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasn’t cat food?

I also know of dogs that won’t eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they’re pigs and will eat anything).

It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is who’s? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too – like salmon. You can’t say it’s the ingredient. How come they know the difference?

They know, especially dogs. If you leave the cat food bowl on the floor the dog will go after it before it goes for the dog food. Cat food is higher quality ingredients than dog food, and dogs know this because after they try cat food they think it tastes better. Cats usually won’t eat the dog food if it is on the floor because of the same reasons. They know the cat food tastes better as well. Here is a solution to keep the dog from eating the cat’s food. Put the cat food bowl up on the counter top where the dog can’t reach it. Only the cat can jump up there, and the cat won’t go near the dogs food bowl on the floor.

What is the best food chopper to purchase?

I would like to purchase a food chopper to chop up dehydrator foods. I was hoping to buy an old food chopper on ebay. I have look at Oster and Rival food chopper and the information that I receive is about the meat grinder.

Does anyone know anything about the one that you attach to you table?

Thank in advance from your information.

Do you mean a food processor? When I think of a food chopper I think of those cheap plastic little gadgets- like the Slap Chop (no offense). If you’re talking about a food processor, then Kitchen Aid is the way to go… Less expensive then Cusineart and just as sturdy.

How much food and water do I need to supply my cat when I go away for 3 weeks?

I live alone and have a new cat but need to go away for a 3 week business trip. If I leave a very big bowl with 21 days worth of food and a big bowl with 21 days worth of water will that be enough? Should I leave extra food in case the cat mismanages its intake and eats all the food and drinks all the water in the first 10 days?

Please find someone to come in daily or at the least every other day to feed your cat and give it fresh water, clean the litterbox and play with it.

that is WAY WAY WAY WAY too long for a cat to be left alone for. 48 hrs is too long. if you can’t find someone to come into your home to take care of your cat you should find somewhere to board your cat, maybe the vet’s office will do it or know of a good place.

Where do you get your rabbit food from?

My last two rabbits died when I got my food from petsmart. The food was tested positive for mycotoxin poisoning which is a type of mold and both of my bunnies bled to deah. I’m getting a new rabbit tommorrow and need to know what type of food to get so that this doesn’t happen again. I was thinking that I should get manopro which is a type of food from tractor supply. I was planning on getting a 25 lbs bag but if any one knows any quality rabbit food then that would be helpful. Thanx!

I would highly recommend Blue Seal Show Hutch Delux, but it only comes in 50 lbs. If where you live doesn’t sell Blue Seal, you can always try to find Bunny-16 near your local pet store or online. That’s just my opinion. I used to feed my bunny both Bunny-16 and Blue Seal and when I took it to the vet, he’d always say he was a healthy bunny and it made me proud. My bunny died, though…

What tax category are food purchases for food sales rep?

My husband is a food sales rep employee in which he also gives consultations/suggestions for restaurants. As a result, he eats at many of his customers’ restaurants to try their food or at potential customers’ restaurants. This should be tax deductible because it’s for his job in which he is trying their food and/or trying to promote business. However, I don’t think this would fall into the meal category which is only 50% deductible. Anyone know what category this would fall into?

If he’s eating at their restaurants with an eye towards promoting their restaurant, THEY should be paying for the meals.

Meals taken in the vicinity of your tax home are not deductible. A food critic might have an argument but your hubby does not.

What human food treats do you feed your cat?

I make wet cat food and stick to foods I know are fine for cats. Like Human Grade Turkey Liver, Chicken Liver, Chicken Thighs and Boneless Salmon, Peas and Carrots. What other foods would you suggest to put in there? I tried Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash and it worked as well:)
I do feed dry food, they get homemade wet food because of the bad preservatives and fillers like corn and wheat.

My cat loves to eat lots of human food if you can spare them some chicken not raw or maybe some roast lamb, but if you don’t have that they love Tuna or my cats favourite ham and luncheon
Hope this helps
cheers

What inexpensive food gives energy and brain power?

I have an office job that is very fast paced. I find that the food I’m eating, which is usually fast food, gives me a severe downer right after lunch. I can’t afford to be lethargic at work at any time.

What inexpensive foods give energy and brain power? Thanks.

Believe it or not….peanut butter! Slap some on an english muffin and the protein from the pb, and the carbs from the em, should get you through the rest of the day! ; )

Gourmet Food: The Perfect Gift

We all know someone who has it all. The person you leave for last on your gift list because you can never think of a suitable gift for him or her. That’s where gourmet food comes to the rescue.

It’s a great gift for anyone, all you have to do is cater to their taste buds. And, since food is something that gets used up, you can keep giving more for each holiday, it will always be appreciated.

Choosing the Right Gourmet Food

It really helps to know what your gift recipient likes and doesn’t like when you’re choosing food for them. It would be in bad taste to give canned swordfish to a vegan activist, for example! If you don’t know the person well enough, you can ask someone close to them for ideas.

The best food baskets will contain things that people wouldn’t normally choose or buy for themselves. Things like caviar, smoked salmon, exotic fruits or specialty olives all make for interesting food gifts and gourmet chocolates are rarely unappreciated.

Time periods can be a fun gift for someone special. If you know someone who grew up in the 50′s, for example, why not give the gift of memory with as many candies from that era that you can find? While not precisely gourmet, it does make a wonderful present.

Another option is to go with a specific geographical location. For someone interested in Italy, you could put together a basket with Italian sausages, exotic pasta and other themed items. Likewise, a Canadian basket with some authentic maple syrup and flapjacks mix would likely be very welcome to a homesick Canadian.

There are a lot of different types of gourmet food available, so the difficult part is making the selections. Often, where gourmet foods are sold, you’ll find pre-assembled food baskets with themed contents. This option might be a little cheaper than putting together the entire basket on your own, though that is certainly an option. A pre-made basket or gift box of gourmet food can also save you a lot of time if you are running last minute errands or simply missed an occasion.

A Year Round Gift

Gourmet food isn’t just something to be given at Christmas. While a nice gift box is ideal for the holiday season, there are so many more uses for it. Literally any occasion goes with an elegant edible gift. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.

A hostess gift for a party could be a selection of cheeses and gourmet crackers works well for this occasion, as do chocolates or truffles.

Get well baskets of chicken soup or an assortment of jellies and jams can be ideal for someone recovering from an illness or accident.

An assembly of exotic meats and cheeses, along with a nice bottle of wine, makes a wonderful wedding gift. Surprise your favorite college student with a gift of favorite candies or some fancy hot chocolate mixes. A romantic gift of chocolates or other sensual treats can be a good make-up gift for a lover or a spouse, as well.

As you can see, there is no shortage of ways to use gourmet food as a gift item. It’s actually very helpful to keep a couple of small gift baskets with some items such as chocolate or coffees on hand in case you are invited to a birthday or find that you’ve forgotten an event. It will save you quite a bit of time and stress, trying to find a gift at the last minute.

Finding and Packaging Food Gifts

You might not be lucky enough to encounter what you’re looking for at the local grocery store. In fact, you probably want to avoid things that are commonly found in supermarkets. Your gift will be that much better when you present the recipient with something they can’t find locally.

Ordering online is probably your best bet, or finding a specialty store in your area. Most people find that the ease of ordering online is far more convenient and it can also be a good way to send something to someone in another state, simply by changing the mailing address.

Choose the items that you want to include in the gift basket and package it yourself, or buy a pre-packaged gift box. To make it look more original, you can even take an existing pre-packaged basket and redo it yourself, adding a few personalized touches.

Use your creativity when putting the gift together and you’ll find that it is even more appreciated. Finding a unique method of presentation and adding in some little extras to make the gift more than just a basket of food is what will set your present apart from any others received.

For the budding chef in your life, a selection of exotic cooking ingredients like truffle oil, vanilla beans and spices is a good choice, tucked into a baking dish along with an apron or dish towel. Or perhaps you know a gardener who could use a new pair of gloves, along with a variety of sundried tomatoes and herbs, all presented in a new garden pail. The careful attention to details here is what will really make the gift something special to the recipient.

The best gifts are given unexpectedly, not just for Christmas or birthdays. You can really let someone know how much you appreciate them by simply presenting them with a gift for no particular reason. And what better way to do that than with a specialty food that they’ve been dying to try out?

Gourmet food truly is a great gift to give any time of year. Whether you are putting together a special, personalized basket for that certain someone in your life or just preparing a simple box for a coworker or client to show your appreciation, food is never a bad gift. Especially not when it’s something rich and decadent that the recipient would really enjoy, but probably not buy for themselves.

Should I start feeding my cat food formulated for senior cats?

Hello,

I have a 7 year old, neutered male cat. Should I start feeding him senior formulated cat food? I also have a 4 year old female. She would be too young to eat senior food. I free feed them by putting their daily amount of food in their bowls and leaving it out all day. So, would it make a difference if I feed him senior food? He will probably snack on her food, and she on his.

Thank you.

I really wouldn’t worry at this stage. If something arises during the annual vet trips, then it can be addressed.

My cats range from over 141/2 years to slightly over 2 years in age. They all get the same food, and they are all doing fine.

When I was at home we had a cat that lived to be over 23 years, and he didn’t have any different diet than when he was young.

What is the difference between brand food and food brand?

I know what is ethnic food, exotic food, vegetarian food, but I don´t know what is brand food?

Brand food is a "name brand" like Kellogg’s, Betty Crocker, Campbell’s etc…the food brand is each stores "generic" for the same food at a lesser price. Be careful…some food brand items do not have the same quality. It is all just trial and error. :-) Hope I helped.

What cat food is best for a cat that vomits everything she eats?

We adopted a cat that was a stray. I bought her some cheap dry cat food. After a week she started throwing it up and won’t eat it any more. She will eat soft cat food but is still throwing up. What should I feed her? I tried mixing rice in her soft food but that didn’t work.

If your kitty has a sensitive stomach your may want to try a presciption cat food, IE Science Diet Sensitive Stomach
Or…we had this same problem with our pet, and the only food he could keep down was meat baby food (Gerbers chicken, turkey, veal) mixed with rice cereal baby food. We ended up feeding him this 10 years.
But definately, have the vet check out your kitten.
Hope things go better!

Identifying Food Allergies – 8 Foods That Commonly Cause Allergies

Common food allergies are one of the most popular types of allergies that exist. When you initially eat a food, you may not know you are allergic to it. Minor symptoms of common food allergies usually result in swelling and tingling of the lips and tongue and swelling in the mouth. More severe allergies include trouble breathing, swelling of the throat, vomiting and fainting. These conditions require immediate attention because it could be become fatal. The more common term for these conditions is anaphylaxis shock. People with common food allergies could also suffer from upset stomachs, skin rashes or itchy, swollen eyes. There is no exact symptom that a person with a common food allergy will get so it is important to note all the different reactions you might have after eating a certain meal.

The good thing about common food allergies is that if you stay away from these foods, the allergies will not be a problem. There have been eight foods that are associated with common food allergies.

1. Milk
2. Eggs
3. Peanuts
4. Tree nuts
5. Fish
6. Shellfish
7. Soy
8. Wheat

About 90 percent of common food allergies can be related to these eight foods. People with these food allergies have gotten help from the Federal Food and Drug Administration identifying harmful foods. Companies and restaurants are required by law to state if any of these foods are in an item. Also, they have to state if one of these foods is used in the cooking process. The FDA is looking out for everyone to make common food allergies uncommon.

Reading labels and all warnings on food is important. If you have a peanut allergy, but do not realize that a certain snack could have peanuts in the process, you could end up suffering for a severe reaction. Labels will state if peanuts are or could be used while making the food.

If you think you have a food allergy or notice that after you eat a certain item that you do not feel well, you may want to check with your doctor to see if you have any allergies. There are ways your doctor or an allergist can check for common food allergies. Such tests include a blood test, skin test and a careful description of what you have eaten. It is smart to keep a journal of foods and write down whenever you have a reaction. This way doctors can use this when deciphering the information and will be able to tell if you have a common food allergy.

If you do have common food allergies, let your doctor know on every visit about this allergy. There are some medications that you might not be able to take because you might have a reaction to the medicine.

How can I send food to starving people in Africa?

I want to help, but I don’t want to give money. I want to buy food and send the food. Are there charities that will pick up my food for me, or is there a charity that I can send food to?

Who is going to pay the costs of shipping the food to Africa? And do you realize that, by donating food, you are taking money from poor farmers and food stall sellers who are desperately trying to make a living in Africa?

It’s too expensive to gather and transport food from individual donors outside of a country — it’s much more cost-effective and beneficial to the community to buy the food *in the country* and distribute it to those in need. It’s even MORE beneficial to pay for experts to train food growers there to grow more and better food.

Some organizations, like CARE international, are even refusing large food donations from governments, because of how much it hurts the local economies, and is asking governments to, instead, purchase LOCAL food in Africa (or elsewhere) to feed the LOCAL community.

You can gather food and donate it locally, to your local food shelter.

Food safe ways to discourage insects to go in the cupboards?

Besides putting the food into containers and stuff. Are there any sorts of herbs or something? Or a repellent that won’t contaminate the food? Thanks.

Believe it or not ordinary table salt and pepper work great, salt tends to dry the insects body quickly which they don’t like and the pepper has a burn when they clean their legs again they don’t like the spice, just shake on shelves in drawers and under cabinets…hope this helps good luck

Why are the ants all over my cats food? And what can I do to get rid of them?

If I leave food even a little bit of food in my cat’s bowl for any amount of time day or night (I would suspect that ants have no concept of time), when I look in the bowl again there are these little tiny black ants going in and out of the fool bowl and intermixed with the food. This only happens when I put the food bowl on the tile kitchen floor and the tile bathroom floor. I have put out ant traps but they didn’t seem to work and I was worried that my cat might get into it. I am afraid to spray anything in case it gets on the food or the cat injests it somehow. My apartment is kept clean, just a bit cluttered with clothing, no food on the floor to attract these darn things. I do live in a house with other apartments, could the ants be coming from them? Help!!! I need to get rid of the ants and be able to keep a bit of food for my cat in the bowl when I am not home in the day time!!!

I have found the Grant’s ant stakes to be effective in getting ants out of my home. There is no way a cat can get into them and be poisoned.

If you are leaving dry food out for your cat it is really not a good idea. It is much healthier for the cat to have two "meals" a day even if your return in the evening is somewhat erratic. The cat will not starve waiting for your return.

When dry food is out all the time the cat’s digestive system is always in an "on" mode. This means that blood and digestive juices are constantly in the cat’s stomach and the healthy fresh blood is not available for the maintenance of other important organs in the body.

How will food and necessities be made available and distributed if there is a depression?

In the 30′s Depression, food became scarce and many things unavailable. But then 50% of the people grew their own food. Every body traded for goods and services because there was no money. No jobs. Losing a house is one thing, but no food is quite another.

superheros?

How much food should we feed our 3 month old kitten?

She is only 3 months old, but she always meows for food. The bag of food says to give her 1/3 cup but is that per day or per feeding time? We would like to feed her twice a day, but we don’t know how much to feed her and she is already starting to get a little chubby. She also tries to eat the dog food when she has none.

Also, is Neutro a good brand?

Thank you for your help!

The recommended serving is the total amount to feed a cat per day. Since she is still a baby, break that 1/3 cup into a couple of smaller meals a day. Don’t give her 1/3 cup each serving. You’ll wind up with a chunky cat.
