The Impact of Environmental Factors on Gout

The American College of Rheumatology has revealed the impact of environmental factors like humidity and heat on Gout affected organisms. Patients suffering from Gout attacks must know how these actions on their disease in order to be able to prevent further acute Gout attacks.

Gout or hyperuricemia is caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the body’s joints as a result of an increased seric level of the uric acid. This acid is the waste substance in the breakdown of purines found in beer, fish, mushrooms and beans. The local symptoms of Gout are redness and swelling of the affected joint, pain, heat and starkness. Gout may also produce general symptoms like fever, chills, tachycardia and general sickness.

Dehydration caused by heat and humidity are known to be triggers of the Gout acute and recurrent attacks. Most common Gout debuts at the top of the big toe.

A scientific study was made on a number of 200 subjects with at least one Gout attack in the medical history of the past year. Patients were asked to complete an on-line

Questionnaire on a specialty web-site and refer to the risk factors they have submitted to two days before the Gout attack. The same questions needed to be answered by the patients over a two day control period. The physicians supervising the test collected information the local temperature, barometric pressure, humidity and precipitations in the area where every subscribed patient lives.

The clime data of the hazard and control period were compared taking into consideration also possible alcohol consumption, diuretic use or high purine intake for every patient.

High temperature and high rates of humidity proved to increase the risk of recurrent Gout attacks. The hyperuricemia acute attacks doubled when the medium temperature increased from 0-53 degree Fahrenheit to 87-105 degrees. An assembling rate of reoccurrence was found to be generated by an increased of the air humidity. Atmospheric pressure and precipitations proved to have no actual influence on the Gout attacks.

After the demonstration of the impact the two weather factors have on the recurrent attacks, physicians advised their patients to ingest high amounts f water during warm and humid periods, to stimulate the elimination of uric acid through the kidneys.

The main causes of Gout have proven to be genetic, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. A strong influence seemed to have the environment factors heat and humidity. About 1 in 100 persons develop Gout; 6-7% of elder men are affected by it and the number of women suffering from Gout increases after menopause.

What is a good science fair project for environmental engineering?

Science fair projects are meant to solve problems, not to show how something works. I’d like to do a science fair project in the category of engineering using my LEGO Mindstorms robotics kit. The judges at the science fair especially like environmental projects, so I want to do an environmental engineering project. An example would be "What alternative energy source is the most efficient: water, wind, or geothermal?" Something like that would be good. If you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate to see them.

Put a solar panel on the robot. Use the controller for the robot to make it move around using the suns energy. Say this should be the use of energy for cars, making them run by electricity. If they ask about nighttime, give the example of a glow-in-the-dark magnet. It gathers the energy it needs during the day. uses it at night. Also use the example about the terrible oil spill in the gulf of mexico thats going on right now. Say that would be abolished if we were to use an alternative energy source for our cars and machines, aka the suns energy.Don’t know much about enviormental engineering, but I think this falls into that catagory. Not very original but good examples for it are here.

What schools do you recommend for environmental architecture?

I want to study architecture, environmental engineering, and environmental design. I have a 4.05 cumulative GPA and will be graduating high school in two years. I’m willing- and would prefer to- work very hard and take 18 credited hours or more, while auditing a class or two. I can’t afford to go out of the US unless a full tuition scholarship is available.

Also, what are some ways to get noticed and get scholarships from these schools?

You will not get a full tuition scholarship to study outside the USA.

You need to stop thinking in terms of "environmental" anything. It is the sign of an unemployable tree-hugger.

Environmental Engineering has the most credibility of any study, but even environmental engineers get little respect from other engineers.

How do you find out the Environmental Health Officer For Havering?

I wanted to know who the Environmental Health Officer for Havering area in the UK is. Does anyone know how to find this out, or perhaps you know who it is and could tell me. I live in Essex, Romford so I am looking for the Environmental Health Officer that covers that area.
A few points I think I should explain to be clearer:
I’m looking for the Envirinmental Health Officer for Havering who does house visits in the Rush Green area. I have searched the internet and so far can not find anyone under that title/

Agriculture: Our Biggest Environmental Disaster

There are no “good old days” of farming. From when people first started to herd animals and scratch the ground to plant seeds, farming has been an environmentally destructive force. We have heard a lot in recent years about the destruction of the rainforest in South America and the Red Woods in California. Every state has some form of agriculture. Every ecosystem in the United States has been impacted by agricultural activities. The rainforest and the Redwoods are more glamorous than the Prairie Lands of Illinois or Iowa.

In decades past, organic farming or sustainable agriculture were discredited among farmers as being a movement to return to 18th century farming practices. Chemical and fertilizer companies used these images to impress farmers that if you wanted to use any alternative to “modern” farming practices you would probably be spending a lot of time looking at the wrong end of a horse. But, 18th or 19th or even early 20th century farming practices were just as destructive as today’s practices.

So, how are we supposed to feed ourselves? We do it through agriculture. Anyone who thinks I am suggesting we quit farming and go back to hunting and gathering is jumping to conclusions. The problem with agriculture has always been the way it has been done. From slash and burn to no-till industrial chemical agriculture, through centuries of human attempts at raising a crop, the impact on the surrounding area was of little consideration.

In the 1970′s American farmers were encouraged to take out all their fence rows and plant every available inch to maximize their profits. This attitude was fostered to not really benefit farmers but rather to benefit companies that farmers sell their products to. So what, if you gained ten acres more on a thousand acre farm. The benefit was not that great because the price of corn was low.

Along with taking out the fence rows farmers plowed their pastures, took out timber, and otherwise degraded their properties in search of profits. Or, maybe it was not just profits but a desire to participate in the otherwise booming consumer economy at a level similar to laborers or other people who actually worked for a living. The effect of their activities was increased erosion, destruction of wildlife habitat, loss of biodiversity, and increased run off of chemicals.

Agriculture by nature is a disruptive activity. But, how much agriculture do we need? How much of the millions of bushels of grain actually go to feeding people? Is feeding the grain to livestock and then eating the livestock really worth the amount of resources and environmental destruction that is the result of this practice? A trip to a grocery store reveals aisle after aisle of things people can eat. But so much of it is so processed the actual food value is depleted and some of it is such a toxic mix of chemicals and additives it is not worth the energy used to produce it.

The best days of Human Agricultural activity are still in the future. Until the full impact of agricultural practices on the environment are reflected in the final cost of the product on the shelf, agriculture will continue to be a wasteful destructive force.

Technological Advances and Environmental Benefits of Plastic Cards

It is hard to imagine how modern society would cope without using plastic cards in everyday life. Most adults these days use a plastic card at least once a day, whether it is a membership card for the gym, payment with a credit card, a loyalty card in retails shops – the list goes on. Technological advances in plastic cards have not only meant that the uses of them have become broader, but have also brought environmental benefits as customers can now re-use their plastic cards instead of throwing them away.

O2 is a leading provider of mobile services and have taken advantage of the benefits of using plastic cards with their customers. O2 offer communications solutions to customers and corporates in the UK and Ireland. They also have integrated fixed / mobile businesses in Germany, the Czech Republic (Telefónica O2 Czech Republic) and the Isle of Man (Manx Telecom). In addition, O2 has established the Tesco Mobile and Tchibo Mobilfunk joint venture businesses in the UK and Germany respectively. O2 also owns Airwave O2, which supplies secure digital communications to the emergency services and other public safety organisations.

PCC has been a supplier of top-up cards to O2 for many years. John Ashcroft, PCC’s strategic client director, explains “The pre-paid client base has been an important part of O2’s growth in the UK mobile market. The top-up card has been a key media driving the pre-paid revenues for O2″.

Initially, board based scratch-cards were used as the key media to top-up mobile phones. The cards were individually printed with a code, which was then covered by a scratch panel. Each card was then individually wrapped, with cards either flow-wrapped in links, or wrapped in collated packs. PCC produced many millions of these cards for O2 during this period, and continue to do so for other mobile operators around the world.

As the British mobile market evolved, the use of scratch cards reached an all-time high. It was then that O2 took the decision to start using reusable plastic cards, in an effort to reduce costs and benefit the environment.

Michael Williamson of O2 explains “The board scratch cards were thrown away after each use. The evolution of technology allowed O2 to introduce plastic e top-up cards, which are kept by the customer and reused each time a phone top-up is initiated. As well as facilitating cost reduction for the business, the plastic card means that O2 has a constant brand presence in the customer’s wallet”.

Each plastic top-up card is personalised with a unique number, which in turn is linked to a mobile phone when used for the first time. Variants of the cards have been distributed with new mobile phones, through retail outlets and post offices and individually to clients throughout the UK. PCC has produced over 100 million of these cards, which have been a huge success for O2.

“The card has become a vital part of the top-up process, providing the direct link between the customer and the network” said John Ashcroft. “Product quality is key – each card directly represents O2 in the eyes of their customers. There is no compromise where quality and accuracy is concerned”.

PCC continues to be a key card partner for O2. Michael Williamson continues “PCC continues to offers the product and service levels that a household name like O2 requires. “

What do you think an environmental service attendant is?

I am looking at job ads and came across one for an environmental service attendant. This is at a long term care facility. The only other information provided is the category non-clinical>service. Serious answers only please.

I would say it is a janitorial position. A lot of companies are coming up with "fancy" titles to entice people to take a job that they might not otherwise consider. For example, the garbage men in my area are called "Sanitation Engineers" and a local company in my area calls their receptionist the "Director of First Impressions"

Windmill Power – the Answer to All Environmental Problems

With environmental pollution being a major issue these days, people are searching for alternative sources of energy. Among all the alternative sources of energy that are available, wind energy is perhaps the easiest one to tap as well as to use. Windmills are making their presence felt in many parts of the world for this very reason. If you are someone who wants to harness windmill power, then you can also think of building one yourself too. The entire process has become a lot easier these days and one need not be a qualified engineer to build one.

Windmill power comes along with its own set of advantages. For one you need not worry about mounting electricity costs. In fact there have been instances when many households have been able to reduce their electricity bills by as much as 70 percent using windmills. The other advantage with windmill power is that it is a renewable source of energy. You can typically generate enough power to run various different home appliances with windmills. Generally speaking the amount of power that a windmill can generate will depend on the design of the windmill as well as the wind speed in the surrounding area.

If you are someone looking to build your own windmill, then you will first of all need to plan well. The first thing that you need to do is to choose the correct location. The location should be such that there is undisturbed access to winds. Moreover while designing a windmill power system for your home; you should also make sure that it is also compatible with your power company’s wires. This connection between the two systems ensures safety and easy changeover from one system to the other.

what can you do with a history and environmental science major?

I’m planning to double major in history and environmental analysis? Is this a good combination? I hear environmental analysis is a high paying field, and I want to have a job that pays well while I’m doing something I like.

History wasn’t a job it is for us to know about the past and olden Centuries,Science for Doctors to concultations of the patients,Surguries,Medications, etc, also not related to a job.

How do genetic variation and environmental factors work together to cause natural selection?

Genetic Variation: a measure of the genetic differences within a population or species.
Environmental Factors: characteristics of an ecosystem that can change and therefore lead to a change in the available food, resources and eventually survival of a species.
Natural Selection: the scientific explanation for how and why species change over time based on the idea that species adapt to their environments in order to survive and reproduce, therefore passing on favorable traits the next generation.

I’ll use an example of humans. We are all the same species – but just looking around you can see genetic variation.

EX 1:
* Variation: Skin tone
Environmental factor: Very sunny area, very little shade cover.
Natural selection: Ignoring sunblock, and clothing’s ability to block sun…humans with lighter skin will be more susceptible to skin cancer, and blistering and other pain associated with sun burns. (All humans in this locality will be likely to be burned, but the lighter skin will have a higher frequency of problems). Due to the pain of the burns and blisters, or even higher rates of death due to skin cancer – the lighter skinned individuals would die with fewer or no offspring, while the darker skinned individuals would live longer to mate. Eventually the community would consist of mostly (or all) dark skinned humans due to natural selection.

EX 2: –Assume no grocery stores, and humans are vegetarians ONLY and they have no tools (no ladders, stilts, etc) and assume humans cannot climb LOL! Also assume that they do not share with other adults. This is totally exaggerated, but this can be applied to something like giraffes…I am only using this for humans because being tall or short is clearly something that you get from your parents. It isn’t random, and it isn’t something that you can "work for" like muscles.

Variation: Tall vs short
Environmental factors: All food is at the top of trees
Natural selection: Shorter adults will starve, because they cannot reach the food.

So basically…organisms (plants, animals, bacteria, etc) that have more traits that are favorable in the environment will live longer and have more opportunities to reproduce and create offspring that share their favorable traits. Organisms with traits unsuitable for the environment will die sooner, and will produce fewer or no offspring. If given enough time in a stable environment, the population will eventually reflect the genes best suited for it, assuming pure natural selection.

Sexual selection is different from natural selection, and sexual selection will just make the prettiest/strongest/etc genes be expressed, not necessarily the best suited for the environment.

What are some biological or environmental issues I could write an essay about?

What are some interesting/important biological or environmental issues I could write about? Thanks!

maybe the Greenhouse Effect, and therefore global warming? that seems to be very pertinent to today’s environmental issues

What are some of the environmental factors that you will need to consider in marketing coffee in China?

You are the marketing manager for a leading coffee chain. Your company has made the decision to expand internationally, specifically into China. What are some of the environmental factors that you will need to consider in marketing your coffee in China? Which of one of these factors would have the largest impact on the company’s marketing strategy? Why?

Environmental scanning usually refers just to the macro environment, but it can also include industry and competitor analysis, consumer analysis, product innovations, and the company’s internal environment. Macro environmental scanning involves analysing:

* The Economy
o GNP or GDP per capita
o economic growth
o unemployment rate
o inflation rate
o consumer and investor confidence
o inventory levels
o currency exchange rates
o merchandise trade balance
o financial and political health of trading partners
o balance of payments
o future trends
* Government
o political climate – amount of government activity
o political stability and risk
o government debt
o budget deficit or surplus
o corporate and personal tax rates
o payroll taxes
o import tariffs and quotas
o export restrictions
o restrictions on international financial flows
* Legal
o minimum wage laws
o environmental protection laws
o worker safety laws
o union laws
o copyright and patent laws
o anti- monopoly laws
o Sunday closing laws
o municipal licences
o laws that favour business investment
* Technology
o efficiency of infrastructure, including: roads, ports, airports, rolling stock, hospitals, education, healthcare, communication, etc.
o industrial productivity
o new manufacturing processes
o new products and services of competitors
o new products and services of supply chain partners
o any new technology that could impact the company
o cost and accessibility of electrical power
* Ecology
o ecological concerns that affect the firms production processes
o ecological concerns that affect customers’ buying habits
o ecological concerns that affect customers’ perception of the company or product
* Socio-Cultural
o demographic factors such as:
+ population size and distribution
+ age distribution
+ education levels
+ income levels
+ ethnic origins
+ religious affiliations
o attitudes towards:
+ materialism, capitalism, free enterprise
+ individualism, role of family, role of government, collectivism
+ role of church and religion
+ consumerism
+ environmentalism
+ importance of work, pride of accomplishment
o cultural structures including:
+ diet and nutrition
+ housing conditions
* Potential Suppliers
o Labour supply
+ quantity of labour available
+ quality of labour available
+ stability of labour supply
+ wage expectations
+ employee turn-over rate
+ strikes and labour relations
+ educational facilities
o Material suppliers
+ quality, quantity, price, and stability of material inputs
+ delivery delays
+ proximity of bulky or heavy material inputs
+ level of competition among suppliers
o Service Providers
+ quantity, quality, price, and stability of service facilitators
+ special requirements
* Stakeholders
o Lobbyists
o Shareholders
o Employees
o Partners

Scanning these macro environmental variables for threats and opportunities requires that each issue be rated on two dimensions. It must be rated on its potential impact on the company, and rated on its likeliness of occurrence. Multiplying the potential impact parameter by the likeliness of occurrence parameter gives us a good indication of its importance to the firm.

What is the importance of environmental studies?

I know environment is very important & we need to take care of it.
But the matter in the environmental studies textbooks is quite general & known to almost all the students.
Like anyone can tell what is ecosystem or pollution & what we need to do to protect our environment.
Does the subject needs to be included in the curriculum?
Should it be valued in terms of marks/grades ( coz then the students are more interested in marks) ?
What are better ways to create awareness among students?

Firstly, the content of the EVS books changes slightly as you move on from one class to the next.
Whereas in class 5 you might have read the basic definition of ‘pollution’,in class 11, you study the detailed reactions and in-depth causes of pollution and the scientific names of the pollutants.

Secondly, there is requirement of periodical revising of concepts in EVS,since as you grow up,your understanding increases, aswell as your realisation.

Lastly,if you periodically revise the perturbations that the nature faces, you will somehow be reminded of your duty towards it.

Its true that I also complained of my EVS exams when I was in school, especially when I was in high-school and I had burden of much more ‘heavy’ subjects, like physics, chemistry and maths, I feel that I have changed some of my habits after being influenced by my EVS lessons.

For example, I always turn public taps off when they are not being used, I never throw any rubbish out of the window when I’m in my car,all this because unknowingly, my EVS classes along with other sources taught me that I must protect my environment by modyfing my lifestyle a tiny bit,it doesn’t harm me to do so, you know.

How can I make an environmental board game?

I have to design a board game dealing with environmental science for my AP class. Help! I have no clue how to start.

Have a path of squares that snakes around the board (like Candyland). Roll a die to go around the board. Have the instructions written in the squares. "Went green – roll again" "Left your lights on all night – back 2 squares" "Draw an EnviroCard" The EnviroCards could have points on them (like Life). The player with the most points wins the game, instead of the first player to finish (like having the most money in Monopoly).

Good luck. Don’t worry if the game ends up being lame. Have fun with it!

What countries are diffidently non environmental friendly ?

I’ve been searching for this all day and all I’ve been able to find are countries that are environmental friendly. Thanks in advance for anything.

China India and Russia are aggressively non-environment friendly.
They have too many economic problems to deal with to spend
the effort on environmental concerns.
It’s kinda hard to be "diffidently" unfriendly y’know.

Are finding jobs in environmental science more difficult than others? What kinds of jobs will be available to?

I’m thinking about majoring in environmental science but I’m not entirely sure what jobs are out there and how difficult it is to find a job despite the recession. I’ve read that the general yearly starting salary is around 40,000, and if anyone could confirm this, that’d be great.

environmental science is a good major but i would study environmental engineering.

more pay, able to obtain a professional license.

this degree is harder to get though…but with enough hard work u wll be okay

What is a good environmental project for roofs?

I need to do a project that deals with the roof, but it has to with environmental science.

Solar panels is definitely one way to go. Not only solar panels, but they now make solar shingles. These shingles replace your regular roof so instead of mounting a big panel on top of your roof, your roof is actually the solar pv collector. See this website:(http://www.livescience.com/environment/070621_sun_shingles.html)

Another option is planting a green roof. This means that you actually have dirt and plants on your roof. Clearly, in this option your are limited to relatively flat roofs, but what they do is insulate the roof and keep your home warmer in the winter and definitely cooler in the summer. See this website for more info: http://www.greenroofs.org/

Good luck!

Environmental Noise and Sleep Disturbance

There are many people in this country losing sleep due to external and internal noise in their environment. One of the big misconceptions of people who wake due to noise, is they believe that it is only the loud noise coming from outside such as traffic, railroads, or airplanes that are the reasons for their sleeplessness.

But you could be waking from noise you didn’t even consider, that could be coming from inside your home. This is particularly true for people who consider themselves light sleepers. The slightest noise has these people sitting up, wide-awake, from a sound sleep. One thing to understand is, your hearing is always active and your brain is still processing the noise even when asleep. This is why even the slightest noise wakes certain people.

The main effects of this type of sleep interruption are: problems falling asleep, frequent awakenings, and variances in the stages of sleep. Most importantly it will prevent you from getting  a truly deep sleep for a proper period of time that is healthy.

There are five stages of sleep, rapid eye movement or (REM Sleep) is the fifth stage of sleep. Once you have reached this level you have gone through all the stages of sleep, and will have gotten the most restful night you can get. When you are awakened often, you will not reach all the different stages of sleep.

You will feel the affects the next day through symptoms such as increased tiredness, fatigue, even depression. If you let it go on, you can start to suffer long-term effects that could be detrimental to both your psychological and physical health.

One thing to be careful of, when you start losing sleep for any reason, is the use of over the counter drugs or medication prescribed by a doctor. The constant waking due to the noise disturbance will push people to try drugs to help them sleep through the noise.

This is only replacing one problem with another. There is no telling what the long-term effects can be from any of these drugs on an individual never mind the possibility of addiction. Some people will turn to ear protection devices such as earplugs or headphones to block out the noise.

These things can work for some but, can be uncomfortable and not practical for others. One suggestion for over coming the constant waking is to replace one noise with another. By this I mean things like audiotapes that play soothing sounds such as ocean waves, waterfalls, or rain. This allows you to mask the noise that is waking you with a sound that will help you sleep.

The main reason people wake is because of single distinct noise that goes above a certain decibel on the backdrop of a quite night. This event causes the person to wake, but if that noise is masked with a constant sound that they are used to and can sleep to, then the likely hood of you waking is minimized if not eliminated.

Fortunately there have been a lot of studies on how environmental noise affects our lives. Unfortunately there are so many variables to this problem, the experts cannot agree on the solutions. So although there have been plenty of studies, there are no clear-cut answers.

One reason is, some people will get use to whatever noise is waking them, while for others, this is not the case. This is just one variable out of dozens. Because of this, experts can’t agree on an essential direction of treatment. One thing is for sure; a deep sleep is essential to good health. So if you are losing sleep for any reason you should be examining the problem and seeking professional help.
